Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Prepare for work
   • Job requirements are determined from event information and checked against ‘on the day’ operating conditions, and required clarification of specifications is sought
   • Tools and equipment are selected and checked for serviceability
   • Hazards associated with the work are identified and risks are managed
   • Work area is cleaned and laid out for job requirements
2. Finalise technical preparation
   • Vehicle settings are configured for each race
   • Problems with work area or operation of equipment are reported to appropriate persons according to team procedures as required
   • Modifications or adaptation of equipment are proposed as required according to team procedures
   • Vehicle settings are documented according to team procedures
3. Conduct pre-race checks
   • Checks are carried out according to team checklists and without causing damage to components
   • Problems with components or systems are reported as required to appropriate persons according to team procedures
4. Prepare vehicle for scrutineering
   • Vehicle systems and safety components are inspected according to regulatory body requirements, category rules and supplementary regulations
   • Problems with vehicle compliance are identified and rectified according to team procedures as required
   • Problems with vehicle compliance that cannot be rectified are reported to appropriate persons according to team procedures as required
5. Conduct between-race maintenance
   • Condition of components and systems are inspected according to team checklist, and repaired or replaced as required according to safety requirements and team procedures
   • Vehicle is cleaned and refuelled according to team procedures and safety and environmental requirements
   • Vehicle manual and electronic data is collected and logged according to team procedures
   • Driver or rider technical debrief is conducted according to team procedures
6. Complete work processes
   • Work area and vehicle are cleaned, waste and non-recyclable materials are disposed of, and recyclable material is collected, tagged and stored
   • Tools and equipment are checked and stored according to workplace procedures
   • Team and event documentation is completed according to team procedures

Before competency can be determined, individuals must demonstrate they can perform the following according to the standards defined in this unit’s elements, performance criteria, range of conditions and foundation skills:

prepare two different competition vehicles at two different motor sport events, one of which may be a simulated event.

work health and safety (WHS) and occupational health and safety (OHS) requirements relating to preparing competition vehicles at motor sport events, including procedures for:

selecting and using personal protective equipment (PPE)

using motor sport event safety equipment, including firefighting equipment

identifying acceptable tolerance levels for noise, heat and fumes

environmental requirements, including procedures for trapping, storing and disposing of fluids and contaminants released during vehicle preparation

technical preparation procedures, including procedures for configuring:

vehicle settings for individual events

work area for individual events

pre-race checking procedures

vehicle scrutineering preparation procedures, including:

inspection techniques
